The emergence of American literary influence beyond its borders started with poets of the stature of Walt Whitman and Emily Dickinson, and it continued with new voices that surfaced in the second half of the 19th century, including important African American and women writers who echoed the social and political unrest of the post bellum years. The 20th century displayed a variety of intellectual and literary expressions in the avant-garde movements, and different venues for realistic expressions that addressed topics of social and sexual discomfort. Narratives of science fiction in the second half of the century also reflected the anxieties arising in the postindustrial years and consumerist culture.

This survey will pay special attention to the intertextual and stylistics aspects that shaped individual texts, going beyond their social and political contexts. It will include a variety of genres: poetry, narrative, essays, songs and theater made by landmark authors such as Edgar Alan Poe, Frederick Douglass, Kate Chopin, Carl Sandburg, Tennessee Williams, Allen Ginsberg, Bob Dylan, Charles Bukowski, Ray Bradbury, among others.

El código del curso es LIT135, horario I200.
