Geological Engineering

Profile of the graduate

The Student Results describe the achievements that a student of Geological Engineering should obtain at the end of the university studies.

The Geological Engineering student will develop throughout the course of the university studies the knowledge, capacity, and ability to:

  1. Identify and solve geological problems in the exploration, development, and efficient use of mineral deposits, applying engineering geology principles, with the main objective of finding and developing new mineral resources or optimizing existing mineral resources. The knowledge obtained and methodologies learned can also be applied to geological problems related to the exploration and development of reservoirs (water, hydrocarbons, geothermal), geotechnical engineering, geological risks, and environmental protection.
  2. Apply knowledge and design of geological engineering, in an open and critical way, using in particular knowledge of mineralogy, petrology, sedimentology, structural geology, geochemistry, geophysics and economic geology, to build the context of deposit formation and to find new mineral resources to support sustainable and optimal development, meeting the demand of the society, including environmental and economic aspects, among others.
  3. Communicate effectively with colleagues, peers from other specialties and the general community, in order to transmit, exchange and generate knowledge, analysis and results in an effective manner.
  4. Recognize and consider ethical and professional responsibilities in his/her work as a geological engineer, making informed and argued judgments to obtain solutions that take into account the environmental, ethical, social and economic context.
  5. Work effectively in multidisciplinary teams by contributing to generate a collaborative and inclusive environment, to jointly set goals, plan tasks and meet objectives.
  6. Develop experiments, analysis and interpretation of data collected in the field and obtained in the laboratory, using knowledge of geological engineering to render conclusions.
  7. Manage his/her learning process in an autonomous and permanent way, prioritizing the consultation of bibliographic sources as the main updating strategy, in addition to other computer sources and the exchange of knowledge with other professionals in the sector.
  8. Understand the principles and decision-making in project management.
