This talk offers a fresh perspective on the Moche huacos eróticos using new theoretical perspectives on Indigeneity, kinship, and (trans)gender. To understand the huacos requires setting aside Western attitudes towards sex in order to see the Indigenous relational logics used by Moche artists, which emphasize mutuality between beings. At the same time, the ceramics also reinforced inequalities between elites and non-elites, between the living and the ancestors, and between humans, huacas and gods.
Mary Weismantel is Professor and Chair of the Department of Anthropology at Northwestern University, and an Adjunct Curator at the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago. She is the author, most recently, of Playing with Things: The Moche Sex Pots (University of Chicago Press 2021). In addition to two ethnographic monographs and her work on Moche ceramics, she has also written about the monumental stone sculptures at Chavín de Huantar.
